the least i could do the rest the soul of the first superstar of Bollywood - Rajesh Khanna - to rest in peace is recollecting the films I saw, the fantastic songs [with great combo of Kishore da and Panjim] I heard [listening to his songs are still a mind relaxing thing]

In my younger days at Delhi we saw this superstar movies like crazy and can any one forget the great films like Safar, Kamoshi, Anurodh, Andaz, Aaradhana, Amar Prem to mention a few

He was the contemporary of big B and their combination in Anand and Namak Haram was the talk of the filmdom then. The magnimity of Rajesh is well identifed when he told Amitabh , I am up and my superstar regime comes to an end with yours to start - did he not say that right to see Big B claiming that status a few years later.

Our sympathies are with his bereaved family and I am sure all of you would join me in my prayers to God to rest Kakaji's soul in peace.

Will we get yet another superstar with his style, delivery of dialogues, dance etc I wonder.

BOOBALAM [PLESANT RAGA IN THE MORNING] TURNED MUGARI [SAD RAGA] IN THE EVENING BUT THINK WHO IS RESPONSIBLE????

The tender song in the morning lost its Shruti  to bereavement in the eveningThe little girl Shruti [6] of Zion Secondary school lost her life by tumbling into a gapping hole on the floor of a  bus - which  cared and carried  her to and fro school and residence.  The unfortunate accident raised the public commotion and eyebrows at the callous nature of handling by  the school, the governmment agency and the service provider all alike.

Now who is responsible for this

The RTO, who inspected the bus and issued fitness certificate [FC] a fortnight ago.  Look at the audacity of the Inspector saying that they check only the engines, the clutches and the brakes of the vehicle and throw the rest to the winds- is the floor not part of  the bus safety?.  This agency, rampant with corruption, will never realise its responsibility whatever and however the accidents happen

The School - what  have they got to  say!  Schools think that their responsbility ceases once  they sign a  contract  with the service provider   What sort of statement is this - unacceptable though - when they fleece the parents with all sorts of fees  for their wards at the school, transportation fee inclusive.  Is it not incumbent on the part of the school to discharge the least responsibility of  inspecting the buses which carry the buds  in it - the future of India !!

The Government machinery - specially the traffic police.  Police responsibility does not end in clearance of day-to-day traffic snarls and providing 'bondobust'  to the VIPs.  Do they check these vehicles for their color [supposed to be painted yellow], the indication on the buses that these transport children, capacity vs occupancy, the condition of the bus in general, rash driving on the public roads, as also installation of the speed mangers/monitors. We see even the tourist taxis have  a small note these days saying that if  the vehicle speeds up call such  and such number to report why  are these buses lack this?    We see these policemen check and harrass the two wheelers at every  nook and corner these days while leaving the buses and jam-packed autos  carrying these young buds scotfree.

The Parents - do the parents check what  sort  of vehicles their children avail to reach their schools. Is it not their responsibility too to see their wards travel comfortably and question the school management , who collect a  fat transportation fee, to ensure safety and security of their children.  Individual parents,  I understand,  have no time to adopt checks and balances  on daily basis but atleast they could form a consortium to check at random the condition of the vehicles that carry their beloved ones,  on a turn basis.  The worst part is still not over, as we witness the autos jam-packed with children who suffer suffocation daily and it is a nightmare for them to travel one on the other on daily basis.

I am not here to write a fault-finding article but the loss when occurs is irrepairable  to the parents.
The pathetic case  of  Shruti -   who was swallowed by the rear wheels of the bus which transported her over the years , thro a gapping hole on its floor- should be an eye opener for all of us.  I was shaken up  totally, as you all would also be, by this gory accident at Saliyur.  The magnanimity of  the father of the deceased, Sethumadhavan, needs an appreciable mention when he, amidst his bereavement, requested  the general public that these checks be done to avert such accidents in the future and save children and the parents from berevement.

Our kudos should also be recorded for  the High Court  took up this case voluntarily and to have issued notices to concerned to show cause why all these have happened and  also the RTO and Govenment to pull up their socks in framing stringent rules to ensure smoother sail in future, while remanding the negiligent persons to judicial/police custody.

All said and done the unfortunate thing is that we  the generl public react  instantly to such accidents and in course of time our memory fades and we reconcile to rampant inefficiencies and wake only when another such accident , God forbid, happens. Any amount of monetary help can never compensate the loss of  life of their beloved child.

The point we need to deliberate upon is that this accident unfortunately has been a collective failure and this should be stopped forthwith. My opinion -open to debatable ideas from you -  therefore is for primarily forming  some sort  of a consortium by the parents of commuter-children and institute some strict random checks of vehic;les that carry their beloved children and make a big noise, if they find any abnormality or a lacuna  in the vehicle,  and take up issue with the school management- who acts as a  medium between Parents and the service provider / contractor -   to stop plying such buses immediately on  receiving such reports and call upon the contractor to  rectify and repair the vehicle before the young buds take to  commute in it.

IS IT RINGING BELL PLEASE- ANY TAKERS PLEASE!!!

DESTRUCTION OF CULTURE- ARE WE ON THE RIGHT PATH

I was at a predominantly children and ladies garment shop at Pondy Bazar – I don’t want to name the shop though. I was sitting with my grandson who was sleeping, on my lap waiting for my family to finish their shopping. I was just glancing through the various T shirts and other tops of ladies wear when one of them conspicuously displayed caught my eyes That was a red colour T shirt on which certain words were written in white – they were actually green [பச்சை ] in language if you ask me – which I detest to write here. They say these are brand names like FC and UK – that’s all fine but why they are clubbed with unwanted wordings on a ladies wear is the question we should mull over.
To my left side an elderly – more elderly to me – was sitting holding his grandson too, and he also, like me saw that despicable sentence embossed on the T shirt and was commenting where the girls are going in the name of westernised fashion. Scores and scores of girls were looking at it - the colour of the garment was extremely beautiful unlike the words on it – but none had the guts to buy much less to wear.
The point we were discussing is the deranged culture. He was dating his memory back to few years when the ladies at home would not even think of speaking to male members even within their family and that was cursed as ‘male chauvinism’ and slowly we limped to modern thinking and allowed our girl members to pursue higher studies with the only aim of making them self sufficient or create a sense of freedom and independence – well we have achieved this to a greater extent today.
The way things are going are a growing concern to all of us where the most respectable Indian culture is tarnished –BPO was a major contributor to this tarnish. The point I am making is borne out of my own experience when I was at Hyderabad. The girls working at Google were puffing cigarettes gleefully whereas the boys hesitate to.
Slowly we are giving into western culture and make us guilty of providing freedom and independence to girls – a point of discussion today. I am not advocating girls to be dependent or such thing, but there need to be checks and balances for we parents to adopt.
As a responsible citizen of India where culture is adored and as a responsible parents interested in the well being of our daughters do we give into these sort of deranged culture – A POINT TO DEBATE AT LENGTH PERHAPS!!!!!!!!

Legendary Kishore Kumar (August 4, 1929 - October 13, 1987), born in Madhya Pradesh to a Bengali family as Abhas Kumar Ganguly, was an Indian film playback singer and actor. Kishore is widely acknowledged as one of the finest Indian male playback singers of all time, along with Mohammed Rafi and Mukesh. In addition to singing and acting, Kishore Kumar achieved notable successes as a lyricist, composer, producer, director, screenwriter and scriptwriter. He has sung in many Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali (his mother tongue), Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam and Oriya.
Kishore Kumar did not have a formal training in music [1].He did make a name for himself as an actor, but more than anything else he wanted to become a playback singer, that was his goal in life. Kishore would ask his producers if he could sing on the movies soundtrack. Kishore didn't have a style of his own and tried to copy the likes of K.L.Saigal. Sachin Dev Burman (music composer) one day came to visit his friend Ashok Kumar. On entering the front door he heard, he was sure he heard the voice of his friend K.L.Saigal. He asked Ashok "is K.L.Saigal here too?" Ashok replied that it's not him but his younger brother singing in the bathroom.

S.D.Burman wanted to meet Kishore as he did. After a lengthy chat S.D.Burman advised him not to copy K.L.Saigal but develop his own style, with this in mind Kishore soon developed his own style, the style of yodelling which, he had learnt from Anoop Kumar's record collection, so yodelling became Kishore's trademark.

Kishore wasn't interested in acting, but was too afraid to rebel against Ashok Kumar, who wanted him to be an actor like himself. Kishore had an idea, if he didn't act properly in his movie roles, for rushing from one studio to another, recording songs, composing music and writing lyrics, he also found time to produce and direct several movies too.

S. D. Burman recorded with Kishore for Dev Anand's (actor) Munimji, Taxi Driver, Funtoosh, House No 44, Nau Do Gyarah, and Paying Guest. At a time when Lata was doing well, S.D.Burman fell out with her and replaced her with Asha Bhosle, Lata's younger sister. S.D.Burman, Majrooh, Asha and Kishore became a strong team and produced some fantastic music for films like, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, the song, "Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si", "Haal Kaisa Hai Janaab Ka" and "Paanch Rupaiya Baara Aana" became very popular among the moviegoers, there was also, Dev film
Who can forget the films – run away hits – like Paying Guest and Teen Deviyan. The song "Mana Janab Ne Pukara Nahin" from Paying Guest was incredibly popular. Kishore and Asha recorded a lot of hhod Do Aanchal", "Ankhon Mein Ji", "Arre Yaar Meri Tum Bhi Ho Gajab", "Chhedo Na Meri Zulfein" and there was another classic song from the film Dilli Ka Thug, which had, "C.A.T..Cat Maane Billi" and "Hum To Mohabbat Karega", the list is endless.

In 1969, Shakti Samanta produced the film Aradhana for which music score was composed by S.D.Burman. The first songs recorded were the Mohammed Rafi solo "Gun guna rahe hain bhanvre" and Rafi-Lata duet "Baghon mein bahar hai". However, although Rafi was to continue voicing the remaining songs already composed, S.D. Burman fell into a coma following the onset of a sudden illness and it became the responsibility of R.D.Burman (his son) to finish the task. R.D. Burman made it very clear that he preferred Kishore Kumar's voice to that of Mohammed Rafi and Kishore got the break he had been seeking for nearly two decades when he won his first Filmfare award for the song, "Roop Tera Mastana" and the famous song “Mere Sapnoon ka Rani kab ayagi tu”

For the film Sharmilee, Kishore and S.D.Burman recorded, a duet with Lata with the song "Aaj Madhosh Hua Jaaye", there was "Khilte Hain Gul Yahan" and the smash hit "O Meri Sharmilee". At the same time Kishore recorded with S.D.Burman for the film Jugnu the song was "Pyaar Ke Is Khel Mein" and then around at that same time again S.D.Burman and Kishore recorded for film Zameer(1974) which had the songs "Zindagi Hasne Gaane ke liye hai Pal Do Pal", "Phoolon Ke Dere Hain", and "Tum Bhi Chalo Hum Bhi Chalen" and starred Amitabh Bachchan. Zameer(1974) was S D Burman's last film as a Music Director

Laxmikant-Pyarelal also composed many tunes for Kishore Kumar which became big hits like "Mere Dil Mein Aaj Kya Hai" from Daag and "Mere Naseeb Mein Aye Dost" from Do Raaste , "Naach Meri Bulbul" from the film Roti, "Chal Chal Mere Haathi" from the film Haathi Mere Saathi and "My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves" for the film Amar Akhbar Anthony. However, for many Kishore's most accomplished piece of work for the duo is probably the song "Mere diwanepan ki bhi dawa nahin" from the film Mehboob Ki Mehndi. Laxmikant-Pyarelal got Kishore and Rafi to sing duets for the films Dostana and Ram Balram. The Laxmikant-Pyarelal list continues with "Achchha To Hum Chalte Hain", "Kal Ki Haseen Mulaqat Ke Liye", "Gore Rang Pe Na Itna", "Tu Kitne Baras Ki", "Gaari Bula Rahi Hai", "Ruk Jaana Nahi" (film Imtihaan) and "Mere Mehboob Qayamat Hogi" (film Mr X In Bombay).

Kalyanji-Anandji and Kishore recorded for such film as Dharmatma, Laawaris , Muqaddar Ka Sikander, Kabeela, Johny Mera Naam and Don. The songs "O Saathi Re" from Muqaddar Ka Sikander and "Khaike Paan Banariswala" from the film Don were hits, as was "Mera Jeevan Kora Kagaz" from the film Kora Kagaz.

In 1975 it was reported that S.D.Burman went into a coma for the second time, while Kishore was recording the song "Badi Sooni Sooni Si Hai Zzindagi" for the film Mili. Due to his fathers death R.D.Burman spent more time with Kishore Kumar. He asked Kishore to sing for both Amitabh and Dharminder for the film Sholay.

Kishore with R.D.Burman at his side recorded for Dev Anand's films like Warrant (1975), Heera Panna, and Shareef Badmash. These films didn't do well at the box office but the music was popular, including songs like "Ruk Jaana O Jaana" from Warrant, "Panna Ki Tamana" from Heera Panna and "Neend Chura Ke Raaton Mein" from the film Shareef Badmash which were all chart busters.

Songs such as "Agar Tum Na Hote", "Humein Tum Se Pyaar Kitna", "Mere Naina Saawan Bahado", "Chingari Koi Bhadke", "O Maajhi Re" were hits.By now Kishore was also singing for the younger heroes. He was singing for Rishi Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt too. Kishore and Lata sang some trendy tunes for Sanjay's first movie called Rocky. There was "Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai" and "Hum Tumse Mile".

The new composers like Rajesh Roshan, Sapan Chakravarty (who was R.D.Burman's assistant), Bappi Lahiri and others preferred Kishore's voice. Rajesh Roshan's first hit composed film Julie had some memorable songs, "Bhool Gaya Saab Kuch", "Dil Kya Kare Jab Kisise". Rajesh Roshan worked with Kishore also for the films Do Aur Do Paanch, Doosra Aadmi, Kaala Patthar, Swami, Swayamvar, Man Pasand and Kaash. Bappi Lahiri, know for lifting western tunes asked Kishore to sing hit numbers like, "Chalte chalte", "Aaj Rapat Jaayein", "Pag Ghunghroo" for the film Namak Halal in 1982. Then in 1984 there was the film Sharabi which had songs like "Jahan Chaar Yaar" and "Manzilen Apni Jagah Hai" for which Kishore won another Filmfare award.

Kishore Kumar sang for Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra, Anil Kapoor and Govinda. Due to the adaptability of his voice and success of his songs, at one time, Amitabh Bachchan would always want Kishore Kumar as his playback singer just as Rajesh Khanna and Dev Anand wanted him in the past.

During the Indian Emergency in 1975-77, Kishore refused to sing for Indira Gandhi's "Emergency Propaganda" as a result, his songs were banned by all the national media at that time, but this didn't stop Kishore becoming the legend he turned out to be.

Last years

Kishore's son Amit Kumar became a great singer in the 80's thanks to patronage of R.D.Burman and Rajesh Roshan. But Kishore was still around, singing for the younger heroes and older heroes to their likes. Kishore and Amitabh had a bitter misunderstanding in the mid 80s. Amitabh refused to do a guest appearance in a film produced by Kishore. This upset Kishore and as a result he stopped singing for Amitabh. Coincidentally, Amitabh's films started flopping and he faced the worst career faze. Many years later, he made a comeback with the game show series, Kaun Banega Crorepati.

To me Kishore Kumar’s voice which entralled, enthralls and will continue to enthrall millions was one of the greatest singer India, why India the world, has experienced. There was a spark in his voice which somehow seemed lacking in few others in the contemporary world he lived in then. When you listened him sing, you became one with him. You began to hum the tune the same way as how he'd have enjoyed singing it. The zest in his voice will be unmatched forever. In fact I have taken to him so much so that I keep singing his song day in and day out and had done this on few of the platforms too.
Kishore is known for his humility equally as for his pranks. It was the time when Latha Mangeshkar and Kishore were doing many duets and at one point of time he declined – though Kishore was at his peak – being paid more than Lathaji and told the music director that he be paid a Rupee less than Lathaji so much was the respect he held Lathaji in. In another occasion when Lakshmikanth Pyrelal asked him to sing a Gazal without any hesitation he said that Mohd Rafi is well suited for Gazals and that this song be turned on to him. The cosingers were held at that esteem without considering them as competition – that was great Kishore. Ultimately, LP forced him to sing that song which turned out to be a super hit with Rajesh Khanna miming in the film ‘Daag” and the song was “Mere Dil May Aaaj Kya hai” and Kishore did not prove LP wrong either.
You could imagine Kishore's antics while singing the song, be it as a background singer or while enacting it. There was something about the manner in which he got involved and enjoyed every song of his and this enjoyment was very apparent in the songs. But on the other hand, he could beautifully and effortlessly render a sad song, conveying all the pathos associated with it. - like "Badi Sooni Sooni Hai" [Mili] !
Since the time I got enthralled and hooked onto Kishore songs, which was really very long ago (since the days I was at Delhi 1974-when I had not even an iota of Hindi Songs the way it was), I've collected many of his greatest hits, solos, duets and multiple singer songs too and no day goes without one or the other song being heard while I am at the wheels driving my car!
He died on October 13, 1987. It was a great loss to the music world and his fans but his last wish to go home was fulfilled as his body was taken to his birth place Khandwa for cremation.

I end with his song ‘ Koi lauathae mere beetha huge din” – a thing which can never happen - but am sure this legend fills up lots of hearts with his charismatic voice and beat them who said Kishore is no more with us!!!!!!!
Cheers

ENGLISH THE LANGUAGE I ADORE

All of us are a confused lot over 'correct' vocabulary , pronunciation grammar etc let us examine the word 'psychiatry" now how is this pronunced 'sai kia a tree or 'sai kee at ree ' and the sentences we use daily - is it wrong to say ' i will revert back" or should I say " I will revert" as revert means coming back. We are confused every time we use a sentence for the fear of grammatical error but all the same we need to communicate to make people understand what we think and what we need others to think and act - all is COMMUNICATION

Let me pull a few leaves from my own life:

The first thing - thinking laterally - on the language started at my school - the St Garbriel's Matriculation School Broadway - where there was one Rev Father Vadachery - credit goes to him for the good language we his students are cherished with - who used to teach us with a Latin transcript on the one hand and Wren & Martin - do guys remember the very popular blue and red book we used during school days - on the other. Yes we were only able to catch a few tips out of his bag at that time - thinking back I felt bored then but today I am grateful I was blessed with a person like Rev Father Vadacherry - I am few of my classmates who has a chance to read my blog will agree without an iota of hesitation - HATS OFF TO HIM AND THE SCHOOL WE WERE IN AS WHATEVER WE ARE TODAY IT IS BECAUSE OF YOU AND THE SCHOOL.

The next thing which happened to me was way back in the 1970s when i was privileged to work with a person Mr S S Rajan by name used to tell me that communication being a powerful tool should be used very simple he always used to say that we should communicate thinking the receiver of your communication is a fool - he never meant it mind you - but said that your language should b e simple, firm and good. I was a stenographer then and I always used to admire for the flow the language English that too dictating for numerous pages on simple sentences without usage of any 'conjunction' is an art and I have yet to see another person of that calibre today. I had always wanted to copy his style of simple non-conjunction sentences but I would confess that I had miserably failed - LONG LIVE SIR
I would fail in duty if I do not mention yet another personality in Mr N Sankar the MD of Chemplast with whom I have had the privilege to work too. A meticulous time conscious man - one should get taught on adoption of time and motion from this great personality - and a person who attaches more importance to language right from addressing a person. It is here I was made to learn - which I practice too to a great extent - that nick names should not be addressed with the prefix "Mr". GOD BLESS YOU WITH GOOD HEALTH SIR

I cant NEVER forget these personalities and remain ever grateful to them through out my life for excellent education on the language that we use in our daily routines and how we should communicate to make people understand what we want to convey in a clear and concise manner.

Let us examine a few tips:

1. Increasing exposure to English language print and audiovisual media is a good
place to start with. English being a language with more than 2 lakhs words
and is rapidly expanding hence stumbling upon a new word is common. To fully
know a word - besides searching its meaning in dictionaries - we should. as
linguists suggest, to use it at least for a period of seven days, so don't be
afraid to experiment.

2. Pronunciation is a complex area to improve. Good dictionary may
suggest 'stress' on certain syllables while on line dictionaries may include
sound files to listen to. However, beware of words such as 'conflict' that are
pronunced differently according to whether they are verbs [con con-FLICT] or
noun [CON flict].

3 Fluency is often confused with speed but they are not the same. Indeed, slowing
the pace of your speaking may improve clarity. Recording yourself speaking in a
discussion and then listening back to it, will help identify areas of
improvement . Involve friends In this exercise if possible.

English is an excellent language with amazingly only 26 alphabets in it. It can be shaped and customised as you would like to without in any way destroying the sanctity of the language - a language which is the on;y means of communicating globally.

LONG LIVE ENGLISH!!!!!!!

AVOIDABLE MISTAKES IN CAREER DEVELOPMENT

One wrong step will hinder acceleration and apply the brakes in career development – Do you agree then read on
Irrespective of your venturing into your first job, continuance in present job or migrating to a newer one, one needs to follow certain etiquette – a wrong move or a shoddy presentations will cause to inadvertently applying career brakes –beware!
I NEED NOT BE Punctual
All of us are professionals today and saying ‘sorry’ I am late in coming to office or finishing an assigned job may not work magic any more. There are time lines on assignments and they are to be done on time every time. It is better for career prosperity to ensure our adherence to punctuality in coming and possibly leaving office too. Also ensure completion of assigned work on a time bound frame. Faltering on time lines may besides spoiling your name and goodwill, will not provide an opportunity to mend our ways.
I WANT EVERYTHING NOW
Instant gratification may be our buzzword today but will not work unfortunately in the long run. There is none who can say confidently that he has achieved getting everything he wanted. It should be understood that at work place you cannot accumulate all the experience of your seniors – it all takes time as your seniors would vouchsafe. You can’t aspire to have everything. Not that it is impossible – nothing is impossible in life but may only be difficult as the adage goes - but it all takes time to be bequeathed with. One often mixes career with money and if one wants promotion in work place and aspires for better compensation, worth as an individual should increase to keep pace with the cost.
THAT’S ALL I AM GOING TO DO
If you are not open to change and confine only to job descriptions worked out for you, you not only get unnoticed but also miss out an opportunity of an upliftment. Take up jobs outside your work to establish and demonstrate your untapped latent talents which will prove that you have the willingness to rake up newer initiates too
I AM THE ONLY ONE WHO MADE IT TO SUCCEED
No man is an island all by himself and as a Tamil adage goes “ no single tree can make a groove ” This attitude is a very wrong one to practice if one wants to climb the ladder of prosperity in his career. World cup is not won because Dhoni alone thought he could do without the outstanding and concerted team work of his team. The leadership in you should inspire the team to come out with sparkling performance to succeed. If you do well, give and share its credit with your juniors and peers who contributed to it ; even if you do not jell with few of them practice the art of being polite and take them along your wings – a sure way to leadership and prosperity. It should also be understood that there is no place for emotions ,anger and tantrums in workplace as all of us work for a common purpose and goal as set out by the corporate which has engaged you. Remember that all your mail are being sent using the corporate server and ‘bad mouthing’ ‘unparliamentary words’ or an unwanted chat in office could lead to avoidable and embarrassing fiasco.
I KNOW EVERYTHING
No job today is secure and it not that one can know everything and there is a lot for the learning in this world till we are in it. Business landscape all of us should realize, keeps changing constantly. If you do not want to be a Dinosaur you need to upgrade skills of yours constantly – an exercise better practiced to be in the rat race in this commercial and hectic world. Past accomplishments, though laudable, do not suffice anymore and learning through the seniors takes a paramount importance. After all they did not reach the place to be called senior without expertise and experience. If you neglect them and their experience it will not only exasperate them but will also deprive you from correcting your mistakes.
I AM IRREPLACEABLE
This is an absolute misnomer. Nobody is indispensable today- if you are not there, someone else will chip in to churn the wheels of business. Before aspiring for promotion, be a bit introspective and ask yourself “am I worth and prepared for it” Promotion not only means more professional respect but also a ‘changed lifestyle’. If you are not prepared to take up a larger assignments in the company, your promotion can backfire you and stifle your prosperity. Hence don’t promise something without ensuring that it is achievable.

BEST THINGS ARE ACHIEVED BY INTROSPECTION OF HAPPENINGS AND FOLLOW THE ENRICHMENT TIPS WE GET BESTOWED FROM MUCH EXPERIENCED PEOPLE AMONGST US THAN WAITING TO LEARN IT OURSELVES AS WAITING WILL NOT BRING BACK THE TIME ELAPSED

DO YOU KNOW THE POLLUTION LEVELS IN CHENNAI AND WHAT WE INHALE DAILY - DO WE care really

Come winter, the trend which increases is sneezing and wheezing with increasing pollution levels - contribution vehicular emissions, buring of waste oil, construction debris et al

The dip in temperature combined with moisture in the air forms a thick layer of smog [smoke from vehicles trapped in fog]. According to TNPCB the higest respiratory suspended particulate mtaerial [RSPM] is witnessed at Vallalar Nagar [119] followed closely by T Nagar [104] which are above the permissible level of 100.

Both these areas show a higiher value as they have a very fair amount of commercial activity besides being densely populated.

RSPM is formed due to emissions from vehicles and burning of industrial waste, construction debirsw and is easily inhaled by human beings. However it was pointed out that in Chennai, vehicekle emissions are the major contribution to RSPM as njo major industry is in the city or its suburbs.

December is always saddled with increased RSPM levels as cold air ie heavy and settles down ina thick layer close to teh ground Since thre exits lots of moisture the smoke let out by automobiles get stuck in this cold layer. Hence, what we have is a thick layer of air mixed with nitrogen, sulphur dioxide as also dust particles hovering just above the ground This poses problems specifically during the wee hours and late night when the temperature dips and remains at lower levels, for both motorist and pedestrians alike.

An alarming repor tis that we have reached the fourth place from twelfth on respiratory problems whose result is sometimes fatal too. This attacks all ages and if found one in every eight person. Children more specifically are prone to asthma and bronchitis. What do we do to reduce the RSPM.

HOW DO WE COMBAT THIS DANGER
Every one of us can venture - YOU CAN DEFINITELY DO THIS BIT - to contribute to combat this by

- usage of vehicles only when necessary
- combine transport amngst friend where use one vehicle for a few to stroll around
- judicious burning - if not avoided - of oil based material
- wrap round construction sites to cumulate debris particles than letting in air
- avoid felling of trees
- encourage planting of trees

ARE WE GAME TO GO WITH THE MANTRA 'GO GREEN' TO SAVE THE PLANET AND THE HUMAN BEEINGS TOO IN IT
